Stala Contemporary, 2024

The shadow of a tree becomes a ghost, flowers turn to blood, artificial plants wait offstage for their cue.

Jacob Kotzee presents a new series of paintings examining the transitive quality of artificial light sources. They bleed together flowerbeds, illuminate stage settings, and float in space, looking back at you. Truncated and rearranged, these surfaces are at once familiar and indeterminate.
